Open Enrollment Deadline
If you have not already signed up for health insurance through open enrollment, do not worry, you still have some time. The deadline for open enrollment is February 15th, and if you miss the deadline, you will be left without coverage and have to face heavy fines.
If you had enrolled in a health insurance plan through the marketplace for 2014, you will be automatically enrolled in the same policy for 2015. However, even if you were automatically enrolled, you have the opportunity to change your health insurance coverage until February 15th. Even if you are happy with your current plan, it is a good idea to review your plan, since the coverage options and cost may have changed.
The only way that you can sign up for a health insurance policy outside of the open enrollment period is if you have a qualifying life event that qualifies you for a special enrollment period. Some of the most common qualifying life events that will qualify you for a special enrollment period include:
- Getting married or getting divorced.
- Having a baby, adopting a child, or putting a child up for adoption.
- Moving your permanent residence to a different state that does not offer the same health insurance plan that you are currently enrolled in.
- Losing your health insurance coverage due to the loss of your job, aging off of your parent’s health plan, losing your eligibility for CHIP or Medicaid, or any other similar event. Keep in mind that voluntarily giving up your health insurance coverage will not qualify you for a special enrollment period.
