Bike Safely This Summer!
Summer is the perfect time to hop on your bike with your whole family and enjoy the outdoors. While riding your bike is a fun way to stay healthy, it can also be dangerous if you do not take the proper precautions. Keep these summer bike tips in mind to make sure that you have a fun and safe summer filled with miles of riding.
- Wear the right helmet – every time you jump on your bike, even if it is just to go around the block, make sure to put on a well-fitting helmet. Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to save your brain if you crash.
- Adjust your bike – when you stand over your bike, there should be 1 to 2 inches between you and the top tube if you have a road bike, or 3 to 4 inches if you have a mountain bike. The seat should be level back to front. Adjust the seat height so that you can slightly bend at the knee when your leg is fully extended.
- Check your bike – before you head out on the road, check to ensure that your tires are properly inflated and that your brakes are working properly. If you are going on a long ride, you may want to bring a tire patch kit and pump in case you get a flat.
- See and be seen – the best way to make sure that you are seen by others while on your bike is to wear bright, fluorescent, or neon colors, no matter if you are riding during the day or night. You should also consider wearing gear that reflects light, or put a flashing light on your bike.
